Everyday records

Look beyond the job title

A short occupational label rarely captures all the work in a life.

01

Read the context

Consider correspondence, photographs, directories and organisational records alongside formal employment descriptions. Caring, household work and informal enterprise may appear indirectly rather than under a standard job title.

02

Separate evidence from possibility

A receipt or membership entry may establish an activity at a particular time. It may not reveal how long the work continued or who else contributed. Keep the claim proportionate to the source.

03

Write a fuller caption

Explain the specific evidence instead of replacing one short label with an invented biography. Give the date, source and limitation. Carefully described fragments can preserve a richer picture while leaving missing chapters open.
